The March on Washington, 9/12/2009
Saturday, I joined thousands of “forgotten Americans” on the streets of Washington protesting the runaway spending and the general tone deaf government that a growing percentage of Americans have realized must be reined in – and it can only be done by “We the People”.
My wife Susan joined me, my youngest son Michael, a freshman in college, and about ten friends. We took our lunch, and stayed most of the day.
The walk up Pennsylvania Avenue, marching with wall to wall patriotic Americans singing and shouting, was an unforgettable lifetime memory. The sound of cheering, which several times started way behind us and swept up the street and washed over us like thunder in a canyon, was a living force of nature and we felt an electrifying sense of excitement in the moment.
Congress and MSM, can you hear us now? How about you, President Obama? No, not yet. We have more to do, more to endure, more to sacrifice, more to accomplish.
This movement is not pro-Republican or anti Democrat. It is not even exactly conservative vs. liberal (although almost all positions would be considered conservative). It is Pro-America, as understood by what the Founders created, a limited government, by the people, for the people and of the people; and against a corrupt, special interest/lobbyist led feeding frenzy that is bankrupting us.
There is no doubt, however, that the underlying motivation is the radicalism of Obama, and the growing fear we are all feeling about his reckless policies, particularly the spending which threatens to bankrupt the nation and destroy the dollar. Obama and his radicals are the wake up call, but are we too late? It is a little scary when Communist China is giving us financial advice.
I think it is beginning to become evident, that this Tea Party Movement is developing into a very serious, maybe even historical phenomenon. As an observer of the political scene since the 60’s, it may be that, outside of the anti-war movement of the Vietnam era, there has never been an organic uprising of the population as powerful or numerous in our lifetimes. This movement is changing things, but it is still seeking leadership. So far, its leadership has come from organic, non-professional, grass roots “real people”.
There was no charismatic, famous leader at this rally, and it was not about that.
When given a glimpse of political (read politician) leadership, the movement embraces it powerfully, but so far, it has mostly been disappointed by the few individuals who have made tentative steps forward, only to be driven back by a fierce Liberal Backlash by the establishment elites such as the Mainstream Media, Liberal Academia, and the Professional Political Class. I am thinking of Sarah Palin as the best example of initial prominence then, beating her back, by the liberal backlash. It is tough to take, who is able to stand up to this? We the People, is the answer.
Also, it should be pointed out, the Republican Party has had little to do with the Tea Parties. They are tangentially supportive, but fear them as well. And TP people don’t like Republicans much more than Democrats. A pox on both their houses they say. Moreover, Republicans fear the Liberal Backlash, more than the TPM - especially the professional class of campaign consultants. At the first sign of criticism, the professionals freeze, and start backpedaling. Most politicians do not think for themselves, they are led around by the nose by their handlers and consultants. The consultants are part of the feeding frenzy, so it is kind of a problem getting good candidates. It is my observation that most consultants are mercenaries, and do not really believe in anything but how to achieve the highest income. The most successful lobbying firms and campaign firms strive to have prominent Republicans and prominent Democrats, so they have their hands in any and all legislation and campaigns – it is only about making money, not good policy. Oh yeah, America's best interests? We'll get back to you on that.
In addition to the Tea Party Movement, who else matters? Well, they are mostly the Talk Show Hosts, starting with Glen Beck, who is threatening to eclipse Rush Limbaugh, Rush himself, Sean Hannity, Roger Hedgecock, and Michael Savage to name the most prominent. None of them, except for Beck, have formal ties to the TPM, but they fearlessly enunciate what real Americans are thinking, everyday from their shows, and they don’t back down.
There will be more.
